Big Wedding Celebration in Lombok

April 6, 2013 Destination Wedding

I still remembered my first meeting with Yasmin. We’re just about to close our studio and she walked in to the studio. So I sat with her in the gallery, where we had a such a lively chat about 45 minutes. She shared some stories about her background, her fiance and her upcoming wedding in Lombok. And it was some of the most unique stories. At one point, Yasmin told me that her family conservative Arabic background has prevented her to see her fiance after sunset, and even if they went to dinner, they had to be accompanied by someone else, and I followed by saying to her, ‘I can’t imagine what kind of first night you’ll be having.’ Then we couldn’t help ourselves having a big laugh about it. After she left, I was always looking forward to her wedding. Yasmin & Ghozy wedding was truly such an unforgettable 3 days event. Many believed in Lombok that their wedding at the end of last year, was the biggest and grandest wedding in Lombok last year. With all the VIP who’s there and more than 2000 guests at the wedding reception, it was just a bit hard to believe that it was happening there. But my memory is not about the wedding reception, my memory was the warmth of Yasmin & Ghozy family, the people around them, the new wedding culture that I was able to experienced, and the moment we all said goodbye before heading back to Jakarta. And for all these things I would always be forever grateful. At some point, I thought my memories about Lombok would always be about my first honeymoon with my wife, but in my next visit to Lombok, I know that this memory will also come back to mind. Seeing a New Hope

October 17, 2012 Mis·cel·la·ne·ous

15 October 2012 It all began when I was on my way to work and tuned in to the radio. That morning I listened to JakFM, where their famous radio announcer Ronal and Tike were discussing about the big event of the day, the new elected Governor, Jokowi and Basuki inauguration. Suddenly I was thinking to come down and shoot something there, but then I was also thinking what if I lost my wallet there. That could be a disaster. After few minutes of thinking, I decided to go. So I texted my colleague at work,”Let’s prepare some cameras, we’re going to DPRD (The People Representatives House)!” I didn’t and never plan this. I just wanted to feel the power and the enthusiasm that people brought. Like many times before, people have been fooled by an effective campaign tag ‘It’s time to change’ or ‘The change is now’. With a campaign tag ‘Jakarta Baru’, it’s more or less the same strategy. People bought it, but people have seen his work at Solo, so there’s a strong reason why we should go and back for this new leader. For the first time I didn’t want to see it from TV. Just like thousand of Jakarta people who came to DPRD at Kebon Sirih, I wanted to see the face of this new hope from close, from the street. Beyond Jokowi and Basuki faces, these people see and expect a better system, from welfare, transportation to health service. People who stood next to me often shouted,”Jangan lupa kartu sehatnya pak!” Another shouted,”Abis kartu sehat, kartu ATM BCA nya pak!” It’s hillarious at times. The wide Kebon Sirih street is full of people. Men, women, and also children. Before Jokowi showed up, the crowd sang the Jokowi’s anthemn,”Jokowi siapa yang punya? Basuki siapa yang punya?” They went wild the moment Jokowi showed up at the stage. Together they shouted his name,”Jokowiii, Jokowii, Jokowi!” This experience left me with one big question,”Can they deliver?” The expectation is so huge and yet the work can be described as complex. With the right mindset and work ethic, I believe they can. But only time will tell.

Ivana & Suryadi

July 1, 2012 Weddings

Never before I shot a wedding on Monday. And this was my first time. Monday 9 January 2012. I remembered very well we had a lot of rain in January, especially in the morning. It’s wet and dark, reminded me of those winter days during my college time. After I shot Suryadi & Ivana pre-wedding in West Java, I understand that they’re going to have a wonderful time today no matter how the weather was going to be or how many guests should turned up to the party. I think that day was one of the most beautiful Monday I ever witnessed. the Love for the frame

July 6, 2011 Pre-Wedding Portrait

One of my favorite frames, which I found about an hour ago while I was sorting out my old hard drive. This portrait was made sometimes ago for Cendana and Ireny, a great couple who now become a good friend of mine. It reminds me how I love making pictures, to get that perfect frame. Priceless stuff!

Jocelin & Budi

February 2, 2011 Weddings

Jocelin met Budi among those cold cities of Hamburg, Munich or Berlin. I never met Budi before and I was kind of expecting a ‘cold’ German personality. But I was glad that he wasn’t like how I pictured him. He’s a warm person. Jocelin is an old friend, a unique one. Most notably one who doesn’t like to put make up on her face or dress up too much. She talks freely and straight to her point and she’s like this even before she lived in Germany. Their wedding party was the most ideal wedding party I had in mind for a long time. A small and intimate wedding, where you can enjoy the company of your close family and friends. Since they both lived in Europe for more than 8 years, I felt the European architecture of Gran Mahakam Hotel was the perfect choice. Here’s their happiest moments. Cheerss !!

Brisbane 14 October 2010

January 4, 2011 Travel

Brisbane, 14 October 2010 was a good day to remember. June 2003, I left Brisbane and I wondered when I’d returned. I left friends and missed so many things about this little city. I was told that the city have been improved in many ways, in which there are more people live and work in Brisbane, the city has more traffic jam, etc. I’ve been promising my fiance that one day I would take her to the cities I used to live, Brisbane and London. And after 7 years, I finally had the opportunity to return. It was a special and nostalgic feeling. I showed my fiance the University I used to go, the flat I used to stay, my favorite’s place to eat, and some other spots on the city. I couldn’t really describe the feeling. This series of black and white photographs were taken during lunch hour around Brisbane downtown. Some people know how I love doing travel photography. That day was beyond a joy.

Every year Jakarta Fashion Week presents the work of Indonesian best designers. Last night was the first time I tried to shoot a fashion show, usually I just came to enjoy the show. It was pretty fun experience, especially with my old film camera and black & white film. Thanks to Lorraine for the invitation : ) So here’s the show in ‘film noir’.
